Once a product is released, what people see is its finished interface and features. The doubts that started the work, the context we studied, and the options we decided not to pursue tend to disappear from view.
At Sons Labo, we consider that less visible process to be part of the product too.
Recording what sits outside the finished product
Lab Notes will begin with small frictions found in familiar tools and systems, then follow the theory, history, and assumptions behind them. We will record not only what worked, but also the ideas we set aside and the reasons our decisions changed.
- Questions found in everyday life
- Theory, history, and the context of their time
- Hypotheses, experiments, and results
- Ideas we did not pursue and why
- What we learn and change after release
Not every inquiry becomes a product
Some investigations show that the familiar form still makes sense. Others reveal that the time is not yet right to make something new. Recording those conclusions leaves useful ground for the next question, even when no product follows.
Continuing after release
Lab Notes are not only for the period before launch. We also want to explain what we learn from real use, why something changes, and how each product continues to grow.
